On a scale from one to scumbag, where would you put a dad who abuses his baby? How about a dad who abused his 11-day-old baby while said baby was still in the NICU? That's what cops in Portsmouth, Virginia say happened recently. The little boy was in a private room for some bonding with mom and dad when cops allege dad Matthew Wayne Strawn beat the child, resulting in contusions to his back and face. Let me repeat that, a child so small and so delicate that he was still in the neo-natal intensive care unit at a hospital was abused.

It can be lonely out there being a vegetarian. Depending on which survey you're reading, only about 3 to 5 percent of the American population bypasses the meat at suppertime. And if you actually sit down with them, it seems that a good chunk of them are lying about it. Yes, I said lying. They know who they are, but as a woman who's been practicing real deal vegetarianism for 15 years, I'm willing to out them. If these people tell you they're vegetarians, you're allowed to roll your eyes:

I don't care what the haters say. I love Valentine's Day. I love the flowers and the chocolate, the jewelry and the kissing. And most of all, I absolutely adore all those love quotes that are plastered everywhere this time of year -- the mushier, the better. Yup, I'm a romantic. And for folks like me, all those sentimental quotes about love are just proof that the world still has something in it to make us smile. And because there is enough on the Internet to make us sad, I'm serving up a healthy dose of love quote-style right here on The Stir.

What's creepier than hitting on your girlfriend's sister? Hitting on her just after your girlfriend gave birth. That's exactly what Kourtney Kardashian's boyfriend (and baby daddy) horny Scott Disick was up to on this week's episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami. Reviving the age old "why is Kourtney still giving Scott the time of day" question, the father of toddler Mason and newborn Penelope was way more than a little frustrated that his post-partum girlfriend isn't up for sex. So he turned to other sources for his entertainment, chief among them Khloe Kardashian.

A Michigan hospital is facing a lawsuit filed by one of its own nurses today in what sounds like a troubling cases of racism compounded by ineptitude. Tonya Battle says the father of a patient in the neonatal intensive care unit demanded "no black nurses" treat his baby at the Hurley Medical Center. Sick? It gets worse. Battle's lawsuit alleges the facility took the racist man's side.

Sick of parents oversharing on Facebook? You've got a new friend in New York State! A judge has officially banned a mother from posting anything about her kids on Facebook. ANYTHING. A lawyer for the mom, known in court documents only as Melody M., is arguing that the ruling unfairly prohibits his client from celebrating her kids' triumphs. So let me ask you something: when your kid does something super spectacular, what's the first thing you think? Is it "I can't wait to give him a hug" or "I can't wait to put that on Facebook"?

The look a TV anchor from New York's CBS affiliate is sporting in his mugshot isn't one his fans are used to seeing. Folks in the New York metropolitan area welcome Rob Morrison into their living rooms every morning, but not like this, not with a bloody cut running the length of his nose and a chin covered in stubble. Not after being arrested for allegedly choking his wife, Ashley Morrison, in the middle of the night. As Morrison's mugshot from the Darien Police Department continues its viral journey around the Internet, you can see his reputation going up in smoke. Who wants to share their morning with a guy who looks like that, a guy accused of that?  As if you aren't already?

Confession: I used to pretend that movie stars don't really look that beautiful in person. It wasn't to be cruel to them; more to make me feel better about my pedestrian looks. But after walking the red carpet, er yellow brick carpet, at Disney's El Capitan Theater for the Oz the Great and Powerful premiere last week, I am going to just tell it like it is. There are some women who are so beautiful that it hurts. Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz all make the list. Trust me. I got up close and personal and photobombed them all last week.

As the mother of a girl, nothing makes me sadder than that look people get in their eyes when someone brings up female sports. It's a sort of glazed look. You know the one I'm talking about. I can see it pretty clearly in my memory. I just can't see anyone using it about Holly Marschke. She's 14. And yes, she's a she. Holly Marschke is both the smallest player on her high school basketball team and the only girl, and yet she's also one of the team's stars. So why did she come thisclose to not playing? Why else.

A mall is drawing major attention this week, but it's not for the sales. The Dee Why Grand shopping center in Sydney, Australia, has officially banned loud kids. As if shopping with the kids along isn't a big enough nightmare for moms? Ladies, you've been through this, haven't you? You're in the middle of Tar-jay stocking up on tissues and cute tops, and your kid decides to have a meltdown right there in the middle of the store. What do you do?

Two women who hid a little boy away from the outside world for eight years are headed to prison. The Texas women were convicted of abducting Miguel Morin at just 8 months old and keeping him locked away for years. They never sent him to school, never took him for his pediatrician visits or let a dentist check his teeth. But get this: Gloria Walker and daughter Krystle Tanner still don't think they did anything wrong!

Attention mothers of girly girls everywhere, we have a new hero. Her name is Lauren Marbe, a 16-year-old girl being hailed as the next Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein after a MENSA test revealed she has an IQ of 161 -- a full point higher than either of the revered scientists.  Only Lauren doesn't fit the dweeb role society has built for smart women. She's blond. Gorgeous. And among her favorite things? Nail polish and fake tans.

Warning: you're going to want to think this story is a fake, but it isn't. A mother from Georgia is waffling between heartbreak and anger today after police notified her that her 30-year-old son had been killed in a motor vehicle accident. Why is she mad? Because the police reached out to Anna Lamb-Creasey via Facebook to break the horrible news! Can you imagine? You don't even get the courtesy of a "Ma'am, please sit down" when you get the worst news of your life? It's inappropriate ... to say the least. But it could happen to you too.

Parents Discover Their Babies Were Switched at Birth -- 12 Years Later

Have you ever seen the ABC Family show Switched at Birth? It's one of my guilty pleasures, a show about two families with babies who were, well, you get where I'm going with this. It has a bit of a cheesy soap opera feel to it, but I can't help it. I'm hooked. So when I saw Russian parents who went through a hospital baby swap in real life were opening up, I got sucked right in. Naimat Iskanderov and Yuliya Belyaeva lived through 12 years of raising a daughter who wasn't biologically related to them. It sounds like a lifetime. And yet, I'm not sure which would be harder: knowing you missed out on 12 years with your biological daughter or having to share the little girl you cuddled and comforted for the past decade?

If you're a parent or even if you just spend a lot of time around kids, you know they're full of opinions ... hilarious opinions. So with the Oscars just around the corner, what better subject to let the kids opine on than the movies up for Academy Awards? My daughter has already told me that she wants Wreck-It Ralph to win Best Animated Feature Film (it just won out over her other favorite, Brave, and, yes, it's probably because I bought her a Vanellope t-shirt last week and promised her the DVD). But what about all the other films in the running for big prizes? What do kids think of them? Don't worry, we didn't let a bunch of kids watch Argo or Life of Pi. But we did ask our mini movie critics about 11 flicks up for Oscars, and their answers will leave you in stitches.

All right moms, 'fess up. How many times have you let your baby play with your cellphone because you didn't have the heart to hear them cry when you take it away? Once? Twice? Three times (a lady)? After you read this story, you will never do it again. An Oregon baby managed to call 911 not once, not twice, not three times. The 1-year-old called the emergency line SIXTEEN TIMES with her mom's phone! As you can imagine, the cops in Astoria, Oregon are none too happy with Jessica May.

It's not often that I feel bad for politicians, but here we are. Former Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico has come out to announce that he fathered a son with, get this, the daughter of another Senator! The child of Domenici and Michelle Laxalt is now 34 years old, an adult himself, so why the sudden pressure to make a big to do about his birth? Ah, here's where the pity comes in. Laxalt, daughter of former Nevada Senator (and governor) Paul Laxalt, and Domenici were facing the possibility that someone else was going to out their secret.
