The Beckham baby is out, and so is the name David Beckham and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham have picked for their new addition. And while the world is rolling its eyes, I'm going to step out and say it. The fourth time must be the charm for Becks ... this venture into baby naming is just right.
According to Becks' Facebook post, the baby's name is Harper Seven. Yes, he named his baby girl "Seven," ostensibly after the number that adorned his jersey when he was captain of the English World Cup team. It's hubris. It's weird.
But it's the girl's MIDDLE name. Bravo Becks! You found the appropriate way to mix quirk with class in baby naming.
Far be it for me to decide what a "good" name is for a baby, but if there's one thing that drives me nuts, it's parents who put their own laughs ahead of their child's future. Baby naming isn't about the parents at all; it's supposed to be about this child. The Beckhams have proven that you can have fun AND enable your child to have a name that won't get them laughed out of a boardroom ... or send them scurrying for a judge with a name change application on their 18th birthday.
The origin of Harper is being hotly debated today. It may be for Harper Lee, reclusive author of the classic To Kill a Mockingbird. It may just be a cute name that the couple settled on. Does it really matter? It's got that "not too common but perfectly normal" ring to it that will keep their kid from getting her butt kicked on the playground. And yet, little Harper has a middle name that she can either embrace as something special that came from daddy's past or completely ignore ... she doesn't have to share it with anyone when she throws out her hand to say "how do you do."
Now if only the rest of Hollywood will follow in the Beckhams' footsteps ... ?
