I'm starting to understand why Alec Baldwin had such a hard time shutting down Words With Friends on an American Airlines flight this past week. The 30 Rock actor is one wordy dude. Nearly a week has passed, and Baldwin showed up on Saturday Night Live last night to poke fun at the whole shenanigans. He's still talking about it! And we really wish he would just sit down and shut up.
Because Alec's little SNL skit, while pretty darn hilarious, had one sentence that just about scared the pants off of us. And I have the feeling that's exactly what he had in mind: to strike out at the airline industry once again . . . right slam bang in the middle of their busiest season.
Playing the role of faux American pilot Captain Steve Rogers, who showed up to apologize to "American treasure" Baldwin, the actor was reminded by Weekend Update host Seth Meyers that mobile phones are known to interfere with the communications systems on an airline. It was pretty much the point the airline attendants who say Baldwin abused them were trying to make when they pulled his word-building privileges on the plane. But get a load of his response:
Would you really get on an airplane that flew 30,000 feet in the air if you thought one Kindle switch could take it down?
Well, when you put it that way . . . I am never getting on an airplane. NEVER. EVER.
Well played Mr. Baldwin, well played. I think he gets at least a double word score for that one, if not a triple. Because he just struck the argument against mobile devices in the air right in the heart. The scientists keep flip flopping on whether one iPhone is going to take down a 747, but if one celebrity's Words With Friends obsession is really a safety risk, what happens when the next twit with an over-inflated ego insists on tweeting from first class because gosh darnit, they're a celebrity, and they think they can do anything?
Until you can guarantee there are no morons with mobiles on my next flight, I will be nervous . . . at the very least. And I'm wondering how many more will stay grounded!
