Clik here to view.Ever wondered what separates a diehard sports fan from a crazy sports fan? One really loves their team. The other names their baby for their team's coach and is then shocked when the coach gets another job.
I'm not kidding. A 4-year-old in Florida is facing a possible legal name change because his mom didn't realize Urban Meyer may one day leave the Florida Gators and sign a contract with Ohio State. By this time next year, Spurrier Urban Wiley could be Spurrier Tim Wiley in honor of Gators great Tim Tebow. What won't change is the fact that his mom has redefined the crazy sports fan.
Jennifer Wiley is one of those people who, frankly, do not think big picture when it comes to the love of the game. She's not alone, by far. In fact, she's probably just about as shortsighted as these folks:
Harvey Updyke: He bleeds crimson for Alabama, that's for sure, but Updyke didn't exactly think through his plan to poison the trees at Toomer's Corner at rival Auburn University. It got him charged with criminal mischief and desecration of a venerated object.
The Guy With the Texas Rangers World Series 2011 Tattoo: It's a lovely piece of body art. Unfortunately, getting inked before the end of the series comes with a 50/50 risk of your team actually losing . . . which the Rangers did in Game 7.
Karen Shemonsky: In 1999, she paid $6,500 at a Sotheby's auction to get baseball legend Ty Cobb's teeth. And now she has . . . well, Ty Cobb's teeth. What she doesn't have is $6,500 and any actual use for said teeth.
Honestly, the key to being a good fan is to think your fanaticism through. If you blow $80 on a jersey, and that player gets traded, it's not the worst thing in the world. But name your first born after him, and he gets traded, and you're the idiot who made a life-changing decision based on the mercurial world of sports.
What's the craziest thing you've ever done for love of a team?
