Mom Gives Baby Rum and Gets Off Scot-Free, Thank Goodness

Post by Jeanne Sager
Being a mom sometimes makes me feel like I'm the funnel cloud of a tornado, whipping around so many different things in the air that if I dare slow down, I'll drop them and smash them all to pieces. I live with that vague feeling that I'm one silly mistake away from being that "bad mom" on the news. That's what happened to Iesha Hill when she dosed her infant daughter's bottle with rum. The California mom got up in the middle of the night to make her 5-month-old daughter a bottle. Only cops say that instead of grabbing the bottle of water off her counter, she grabbed a similar looking bottle filled with rum. When she rushed her baby girl to the hospital for treatment, Hill ended up being arrested.

'Teen Mom' Maci Bookout Reveals the Sad Truth About Her Co-Stars

Maci Bookout has earned a reputation as the most stable of all the stars of MTV's reality series Teen Mom. Make no mistake: it hasn't been easy. The single mother of 3 1/2-year-old Bentley has had her hurdles, including the breakup of her relationship with her son's father, Ryan Edwards. But when Maci took a few moments to talk to The Stir this week as the final season of the show that's made her famous began, it quickly became apparent why the Tennessee teenager is often cited as the mom with the best parenting skills on the show. This girl was raised "right." And whether she's talking about the troubles of prison-bound co-star Amber Portwood or making it clear there's nothing glamorous about teen pregnancy, Maci shows that she knows exactly where she came from. So what did she have to say?

Teen Helped Light a Boy on Fire and Says He Did It for $5

Remember when you were a teenager, and your buddy said they'd pay you $5 if you did something daring? Think prank calling the hot guy from chemistry class or dropping your drawers to show the full moon. Stupid. Silly. But there's nothing silly about the allegations from a 17-year-old who doused a then 15-year-old middle schooler with alcohol so he could be lit on fire and burned nearly to death back in 2009. Denver Colorado "D.C." Jarvis has already been convicted of attempted second-degree murder in the burning of Michael Brewer three years ago. But now he's testifying in the trial of one of his alleged accomplices, and he's claiming that it was the promise of $5 or $10 that made him do it. Five dollars. He says he tried to kill someone for $5.

'Forest Boy' Mystery Solved and It's a Doozy

The identity of the "forest boy" who oh so mysteriously wandered out of the woods in Germany last fall is out. His name is Robin Van Helsum, and the 20-year-old is not even a "boy." But he IS a total jerk. As many of us (yup, even me), suspected when the weird story first made the news in September, the whole thing was a hoax. The release of photos by the Berlin Police Department this week has confirmed the guy they've spent money and resources on for the past nine months is not actually a kid named Ray who spent five years living in the woods. The dad forest boy said he buried in a shallow grave after he died? He was a fake: Van Helsum's real father died this year, not knowing where his son was.  Say it with me now, folks ...

Need a pick-me-up to carry you through the weekend? This ought to do it. Patrick Ivison has been paralyzed since a truck backed over him when he was 14-months-old, but this week the high school senior walked across the stage at his graduation to accept his diploma. If that didn't choke you up just a wee bit, perhaps it's time to have your tear ducts checked. Ivison's been in and out of the news over the years as one of those kids who hasn't let being paralyzed stop him from kicking some serious butt. Walking at graduation is just icing on the cake for this surfer (I know!) and new high school graduate. If only every teenager had this drive ...

Just as the weather is getting nicer and more moms and dads are pulling out the strollers for jaunts around town, we've got bad news. A major stroller recall from kid product maker Kolcraft has just been released. Three children have actually had a fingertip amputated by the hinge of their carrier! To protect kids and parents -- reports show adults have also been hurt by the contraptions -- Kolcraft has partnered with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to pull 36,000 of their strollers off the streets. So what does that mean for parents? If you think your child's stroller is involved in the recall, here is what you need to know:

Obama Refuses to Deport Young Illegals for Their Parents' Mistakes

President Barack Obama's announcement today that his administration will no longer deport the majority of young illegal immigrants who entered the United States as children has already been dragged into the political arena and it's being smacked around by Republicans. But let's be real. This move goes beyond politics. Protecting young immigrants is a win for American families: all of them. What came out of the White House today isn't about politics. It's about protecting children from the burden of being punished for actions their parents committed. We live in a country where kids are supposed to be protected, doted on, cared for, but until today, kids were being told that something that happened to them when they were helpless infants was their fault.

Moms' '50 Shades of Grey' Obsession Is a Baby Boom Waiting to Happen

Ever since the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena started spreading, I've noticed there's more sex talk among the women I know than every before. And it's not just talk with the girlfriends. Women are actually having more sex. And you know what comes with more sex? More babies, folks. I am going to go out on a limb right now and predict that somewhere in the not-too-distance future, we are going to have a baby boom in the United States. And I hold E.L. James and her kinky novels responsible.

Rich Chocolate Chip Cookies With a Splash of Whiskey

When I checked the calendar and realized Father's Day was bearing down on us, I knew exactly what I was going to bake up for my dad this year. Whiskey chocolate chip cookies are fast becoming my go-to dessert when I have to whip something up fast, especially when my miniature chef wants to be involved.  I happened on them by accident, to be honest. I've always had a thing for chocolate chip cookies, but after dragging my kid to the Jack Daniel's distillery in the spring as part of a family road trip, I needed to find a way to actually let her have some ... you know, in a LEGAL way! And I've been playing with recipes ever since! The alcohol cooks off, but you are left with a richness to the standard cookie that is hard to resist:

What It Takes to Be a Good Dad -- According to Kids (VIDEO)

Moms, I hate to break it to you, but all the reasons you think your significant other is a great father don't matter to your kid. Oh yeah, they benefit from his hard work and belief in equality and all that jazz, but they really don't care. What the kids think makes a good dad is much more specific ... and that's what makes it absolutely hilarious. A video of Chicago-area first graders talking fatherhood that's making the rounds on the interwebs this month is chock a block with kid wisdom on what they look for in a dad. Moms, you better listen up; you've got some learning to do. That is unless you picked your partner based on how hairy his chest was? Get a load of the honest and honestly hilarious criteria these cuties came up with for what makes a good dad:

White Boy Gives Back Scholarship Intended to Help Black Students

I don't think I need to tell you that sending a kid to college is expensive. If my kid decided to give back a $1,000 scholarship, I think I'd be having a heart attack. But Jeffrey Warren didn't have a lot of options. The California high school graduate is white, and the scholarship was supposed to go to a black kid. He could have kept it ... legally. But Jeffrey Warren did something that too few kids do these days.

Dressing Room Peeping Tom Will Make You Paranoid to Try on Clothes

A group of 25 women are suing a California Sears after the store's maintenance man was arrested on suspicion of videotaping the ladies trying on clothes in the changing room. Gah! Because the lighting in those dressing rooms wasn't bad enough? We really need another reason to avoid them like the plague? I know I can't be the only one who is paranoid about dressing rooms to begin with. Just thinking about the germs is enough to give me the heebie jeebies. And there's always someone's annoying kid peeking underneath the door trying to give you a heart attack. But spy cameras in the walls? It's enough to end my in-store shopping days for good.

She's spent four seasons as one of the stars of an MTV reality series. But it looks like reality is just now dawning on Teen Mom Amber Portwood. She just started her five-year stint in prison, and already her family is saying she think she made a mistake. Ah yes, the pity poor me Amber is back. Too bad we haven't missed her.

4 Things You Didn't Know About How to Turn a Woman On

Time for an embarrassing confession. I pulled up sexologist Dr. Logan Levkoff's latest video on sex confident that I'd know all the answers to her questions about female anatomy. I'm a woman, of course I know about a lady's sex parts, right? Um. Yeah. Just like the woman and the man CafeMom Studios' sexologist pulled in to quiz on the names of everything "down there," it turns out I have a lot to learn about how to turn a woman on. Good thing Levkoff's video series has been dubbed "Mom-Ed: In the Bedroom," because she is willing to educate us all. Bet you won't know all of these tips on how to get a woman off ... even if you are one!

Jerry Sandusky Defense Claims 'Everybody' Showered With Kids

The Jerry Sandusky sex abuse trial is reminding me a lot of a car accident on the highway. I don't want to watch, but I can't look away. And the latest bit that's come out from the former Penn State football coach's defense team is enough to make me throw up. They actually put a witness on the stand this week to say that it wasn't "uncommon" for adult male coaches to be in the showers with youngsters. I don't think I have to read between the lines for you folks. The defense that they're putting up is essentially, "hey, everyone else did it!" Remember how that flew with your parents when you were a kid? Oh, what, it didn't fly? Yeah, that's pretty much how I'm taking this one too.

Poor Hilary Duff. The new mom got a rare night out with her husband Mike Comrie at Rock N Reilly's Pub in North Hollywood, and the paparazzi was there to document her naughty mama moment. Turns out baby Luca's mom hasn't given up on her cigarette habit. Eek. That doesn't exactly scream "mama has got it together," does it?

Terrifying Toxic Fruit List Will Change the Way You Eat

Remember when eating fruits and vegetables was actually the healthy thing to do? I'm really starting to miss those days. Because another food safety report is out today to scare you out of shopping, this time from the folks over at the Environmental Working Group. I keep thinking the move toward organic in the market would have forced regular produce sellers to step up their game. It's the lesson of supply and demand, right? Consumers are demanding organic, so the supply should be adjusted. But the EWG is saying no way: our favorite eats are still loaded down with pesticides. If anything, it looks like things have actually gotten worse -- they had to up their "buy organic" produce list from the Dirty Dozen to the Dirty Dozen Plus. Just check out the highlights on what to avoid:

Principal Strip Searches Little Boy Without Mom's Permission

Before you send your kid off to school, you try to instill a sense of respect for authority in our kids. But not too much. We want them to feel safe saying no when an adult wants them to do something that doesn't mesh with our values because we can't always be there to do it for them. Take the third grader who was strip searched by his elementary school principal for allegedly stealing $20 from a classmate. It turns out Justin Cox didn't actually take the money, but that's beside the point. An adult made a 10-year-old boy strip down to his undies. And from the way his (rightfully) outraged mom is talking, it doesn't seem like little Justin knew he could say no ... and she wasn't there to do it for him.

Mom Found Eating Ice Cream Naked After a Car Wreck Involving Her Kids

It would be easy to say that the Texas mom charged with crashing a car full of kids into a city bus was a bad person. After all, cops allege Stephanie Dillard abandoned all three of her children at the scene of the accident, stripped down naked, and set herself up in a drugstore to eat some ice cream. Put it that way, and it sounds ... weird? Mentally disturbed, maybe? Exactly, folks. There are only so many things a person can do wrong in the span of a few minutes before you have to start wondering if they were of sound mind when it all happened. And that's when people with even just a tiny ounce of sympathy in them have to drop the judgment and hope for the best. So here's what I hope.
